Welcome to your May newsletter!! Here are our events and our fabulous guest authors for this month PLUS details for two exciting events during our summer break, a new writing workshop from Elspeth Wilson AND how we are rounding off the first half of our year with a bookish charity collection.

Wednesday 20th May

Craws Nest Collective, Currie

Allison Meldrum has been writing since a very special English teacher with a pocket watch and three-piece suit told her that she might be quite good at it.

Previously a newspaper and magazine journalist, Allison’s debut novel ‘The Life I Owe Her’ examined two themes very close to her heart: Parenthood and Friendship.

Keep Me Safe, set in Kirkcaldy is a psychological thriller where, investigative journalist, Maggie Shields, unravels a web of crime, corporate corruption, and family betrayal.

Friday 22nd May

St Columba's Bookshop, North Berwick

Alex Brown grew up in Edinburgh and is now based in East Lothian, writing darkly comic crime fiction alongside children’s books about a magical soft toy owl named Snoozlewhoosh.

Hit Me! by Alex Brown, is a darkly comic crime thriller that takes the reader on a whirlwind cat and mouse chase from the dark criminal underbelly of Edinburgh to the scenic beauty of the Scottish Highlands - and back. Filled with fast-paced storytelling, sharp humour and gritty tension, delivering an unpredictable and distinctly Scottish take on modern crime fiction.

Streetreads is an amazing charity in Edinburgh who run a library and many other book services for those experiencing homelessness in Edinburgh.

If you or anyone you know have books you'd like to donate , I'll be collecting at May and June then delivering directly to them.

Secret Book Swap - Charity Fundraiser

2pm to 4pm Sunday 2nd August

St Columba's Bookshop

As you know we're moving this month to St Columba's Bookshop and we've decided to support our new North Berwick home with a summer fundraiser!

Tickets not on sale yet but all profits (so everything but the ticket processing fee) will be going to St Columba's.

This will be during Fringe by the Sea so could be a lovely bookish day out!

Loud Poets Night Out!

Thursday 2nd July

Storytelling Centre, Royal Mile Edinburgh

We've had a few folk asking for another trip to see Loud Poets, so here we go!!

If you would like to go, book your own ticket and let me know you'll be there.

Whilst this isn't an event hosted by The Secret Book Swap, I'm happy to coordinate us all meeting up together before the show.

Elspeth Wilson

Guest Author, Elspeth Wilson is hosting a nature writing in fiction workshop alongside Rebecca Ferrier this month at Portobello Bookshop where they will be
exploring different exercises to consider nature as character and its role in scene setting, plot and world-building.
